Consumer-Created Content to Impact Super Bowl Commercials September 28, 2006

YouTube is a pretty popular little website these days.  Everyone’s making and watching and sharing videos.  Speculation is high that YouTube could be purchased for more than a billion dollars.

And advertisers are taking notice.

At least two companies are planning to involve consumers in the ad-making process for this year’s SuperBowl.  You can read about it here.

Doritos is actually taking filmed submissions, from which they will pick a winning ad.  Chevy is taking suggestions on ad ideas–not actual videos–and will select the best one and create the ad professionally.

This kind of news gives me hope.  It proves that my idea has some merit…that there could be significant interest in a user-created ad.  Only instead of letting Doritos or Chevy take my idea and shape it…I want to raise the money myself and have complete editorial control.

There is, however, the issue of one of these companies contributing to my campaign a sizeable enough donation that they could effectively “sponsor” my ad.  Or another company might do it…one besides these two.  Who knows.  These two have already sort of committed to contests with certain set rules…so they might not be as keen to be involved in my ad.

I link to this story mainly as some small proof that my idea is not without merit.  I mean, as neat as it would be to see an ad entirely filmed and created by an average consumer…I have to think it would be even cooler to see some average guy raise the money himself and not have to shill for a set product.

I did try to find contact information for them so I could tell them what I was up to and see what they think…but neither company has e-mail addresses posted on their sites.  But should they ever find their way to my website…they can send me an e-mail and we’ll talk.  Until then…let’s keep the progress rolling.  I’m getting a few comments now, which is fun, and the donations are slowly pouring in…but we still need more visitors to the site.  So please tell your friends!
